The Secret Fire

Karen Ball, Publisher at Atom/ Little, Brown has acquired UK and Commonwealth rights for a YA series from a brand new writing partnership –  agency author C.J. Daugherty and French author Carina Rozenfeld. The series launches with The Secret Fire, publishing in September 2015, with another title to follow.

French teen Sacha Winters can’t die. He can throw himself off a roof, be stabbed, even shot, and he will always survive. Until the day when history and ancient enmities dictate that he must die. Worse still, his death will trigger something awful. Something deadly. And that day is closing in.

Taylor Montclair is a normal English girl, hanging out with her friends and studying for exams, until she starts shorting out the lights with her brain. She’s also the only person on earth who can save Sacha.

There’s only one problem: the two of them have never met. They live hundreds of miles apart and powerful forces will stop at nothing to keep them apart.

They have eight weeks to find each other.

Will they survive long enough to save the world?

Karen Ball said, ‘I already knew C.J. Daugherty’s talents as a powerful and dramatic YA author, but nothing prepared me for the new heights she would scale in this writing partnership. The first chapter of The Secret Fire blew me away and I went on a rollercoaster ride of drama and romance in two evocative cities – London and Paris. I am a big fan of creative collaborations and am thrilled and intrigued by the way Carina and Christi have successfully worked together on an exciting new project for the YA audience.’

‘Being published by Atom is like being the hero of my own book: such an amazing adventure. Writing a book with C.J. Daugherty has been a great way to bring to life a story that could only be born from our joint imaginations. Working with her has meant not only sharing a story, but a different culture, and a different language. It’s been very rewarding and an amazing journey. I can’t wait for our readers to be part of this special trip.

C.J. Daugherty is a former newspaper reporter and crime writer, and now a full-time novelist. The massively successful Night School series has been translated into 21 languages. The Secret Fire is her first writing collaboration.

Carina Rozenfeld is a former journalist in French youth press, and now a full-time novelist. She has published more than 15 books in France and many of them have received literary awards.
